Happy (early) Earth Day!!

Hi there!

The Popcorn Lady team hopes you and your family had a fun Easter weekend! We know there was a lot to celebrate- but wait there’s more!

Tomorrow, April 22nd, is Earth Day, and what better way to celebrate the planet we all live on than sharing some fun facts and ways we can help it out?

What even is Earth Day? It was first celebrated in 1970 by a Wisconsin senator who wanted to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies for the same cause took place all across the country, and by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. Even though we are still facing the same environmental issues, we can all do our part to take care of the Earth!

Did You Know That There Are (currently) ~3 Trillion Trees In the World?

While you may not see them everywhere you look, the number of trees sharing your planet is astounding! Unfortunately, researchers estimate that roughly 15 billion trees are cut down every year due to deforestation. You can still make a difference by organizing a tree-planting event at your workplace or school- it’s the perfect way to get everyone involved, and you can even get some prepackaged popcorn to pass out!

Only 2% of Earth’s Water Supply Is Freshwater

While way more water covers the Earth than land, 97% of that water is found in the Earth’s oceans. We get most of the water we drink and use from surface water collection, groundwater allocation efforts, and even from desalination plants. You can help conserve the resource water by turning off the tap when you brush your teeth, or being mindful of how long your showers are. Did you know that the average homes uses more than 300 gallons of water per day? Reducing your usage can help out your budget and the Earth.

The Average U.S. Home Uses about 11,000 Kilowatt Hours of electricity Every Year

That’s a lot of energy! Electricity and energy just don’t exist, they have to be produced from natural resources. Often, they’re produced from fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, or natural gas) that contribute to climate change. But! Electricity can also be made from renewable sources like water, the sun, and wind! Remembering to turn off all lights and unplug electronics when not in use can help save electricity!
